There are moments in life when finding courage feels impossible. When digging deep and locating the words bubbling in our heart is the path we need to walk but we feel stuck. So many of us have felt stuck for so long in the race conversation. Where are we supposed to begin? What are we supposed to say? How can I make my story and the pain I live feel real (and not hypothetical) in a real conversation? How can I choose to respond and give respect and dignity when all I see is defensiveness and dismissiveness wherever I look?
You are here. You exist. You have overcome so much already. You’re strong. You can do this.
You might feel lonely. You might wonder if you’re the only one. The earth may be moving beneath your feet as your heart begins to comprehend what you were unable to see before. You may be struggling to find your way through the agony of being forgotten. Feeling discarded. You may feel more wounded and tender by the hour; the minute. You may be convinced that it’s time to find the words to speak, to connect, and be wondering whether you can even take another step.
You may feel lost. But you are not losing.
You are not losing because you are engaged. You are not losing because you are reaching for the knowledge you didn’t have before. You are not losing because you are choosing to be present. You are not losing because you are choosing to stare the reality of life in the eye so that you can make choices grounded in reality instead of drifting in the murky depths of assumption.
You are not losing because you are choosing to show up. And change begins with showing up.
